Ottanthullal is a traditional performing art from Kerala, where a solo artist enacts multiple characters using expressive gestures and voice modulation. It originated in the 18th century and was created by Kunchan Nambiar, a renowned satirist and poet, as a response to the more rigid and elitist art forms like Chakyar Koothu.
This solo dance-drama uniquely blends:
- Narrative storytelling through poetry
- Expressive dance movements
- Theatrical facial expressions
- Satirical humor and social commentary
Sopana Sangeetham is a classical form of devotional music deeply rooted in Kerala’s temple traditions. Performed at the sacred steps (sopanam) of temples - especially in the famed Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple -this meditative musical style is considered one of the purest expressions of spiritual devotion in Kerala.
